about

Welcome back to my recording of the complete piano works of Erik Satie.

Volume Eleven is a quiet installment of this series. I was not originally planning to record it at the time that I did, but the opportunity presented itself amidst an unusual and difficult situation. I play all the pieces at a rather slow and contemplative tempo because that reflects how I was feeling at the time (and because it sounds nice that way).

Volume Eleven includes several fragmentary pieces from Satie's chaotic notebooks, all of them published decades after his death by his late-in-life friend Robert Caby (who also completed the last 5 bars of the Schola Cantorum exercise "Fâcheux exemple"). Note that in previous volumes, I have primarily used Robert Orledge's edition of Satie's works. The two Roberts chose to publish different selections of the notebook fragments - the four fragments found on this volume are ones that Caby published but Orledge did not. In fact, I would probably not have ended up recording these fragments, but at the time of recording this album I was separated from my print copy of Orledge's edition, so I ended up looking for scores on IMSLP, where these pieces were immediately available. I don't know what the point is of me telling you all this, other than to say that I enjoy IMSLP.

This volume also includes the Three Sarabandes, one of Satie's earliest, most influential, and most beloved works. He wrote them while shirking his compulsory military duty and hanging out with his lifelong friend Contamine de Latour. This sort of thing is admirable behavior and should be emulated, in my opinion. Shirk your pointless duties and hang out with your friends.

Volume Eleven was recorded on a beloved's electronic keyboard, in Brooklyn, New York, over the course of a week in November 2021.
